Disaster Recovery Steps

  • Rapid Response and Initial Contact:

Immediate response to the homeowner's call, 24/7. The company quickly assesses the urgency of the situation and schedules an immediate visit to the property. This step is crucial for mitigating further damage and easing the homeowner's concerns.

  • Detailed Inspection and Assessment:

Conduct a thorough inspection of the property to identify all affected areas and determine the extent of the damage. This involves using specialized equipment to detect hidden moisture, identifying the source of the problem, and outlining a clear plan of action.

  • Water Removal and Damage Containment (if water damage is involved):

Implement rapid water extraction and drying techniques to remove standing water and moisture from the property, using industrial-grade pumps and dehumidifiers. This step also includes taking necessary actions to prevent further damage, such as covering damaged roofs or boarding up windows.

  • Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Deodorization:

Clean all restorable items and structures affected by the disaster. This involves deep cleaning of carpets, furniture, and personal items, as well as sanitizing affected areas to eliminate bacteria and mold. Deodorization processes are also employed to remove any unpleasant odors.

  • Restoration and Reconstruction:

Carry out necessary repairs and reconstruction work to restore the home to its pre-disaster condition. This could include minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or significant reconstruction efforts for severely damaged areas.

  • Final Inspection and Completion:

Conduct a thorough final inspection with the homeowner to ensure that all work has been completed to their satisfaction and that the home is safe and comfortable for their return. This step marks the completion of the disaster recovery and cleanup process, with the aim of fully restoring the sense of normalcy for the homeowner.

Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover hurricanes?

Yes, most standard insurance policies have some coverage for hurricanes. However, there can be some serious stipulations attached. So, it may not always cover flooding or storm surges which can often times cause the most damage.

Flood insurance would be an additional policy you'd want to have in order to be covered for water related hurricane damage.

Does renters insurance cover hurricanes?

Similar to homeowners insurance, renters insurance does cover your belongings for damage after a storm, but it does not cover damage after flooding.

You'll need to have a separate flood insurance policy in order to have your belongings covered.

What to do after a hurricane

According to the CDC, this is what you should do after a hurricane:

  • Stay out of floodwater
  • Do not use a wet electrical device
  • If the power is out, use flashlights instead of candles
  • Be careful near damaged buildings
  • Stay away from power lines
  • Protect against animals, rodents and pests
  • Drink safe water, eat safe food.
  • Wash your hands frequently to prevent disease
  •  Take care of any wounds or injuries
  •  Clean up your home safely
  • Contact FEMA for financial assistance and updates
